Monteverde, with an average temperature of 17° C (62° F), tends to be a bit chilly. And with an average rainfall of 3000 mm (10 ft), also is a bit wet as well, so sweaters and rain coats are suggested. For the trails inside the park, a pair of good hiking boots are suggested.

A privately owned reserve atop Continental Divide, Monteverde protects six different wildlife communities on both the Caribbean and Pacific slopes. The cloud forest's most famous flying resident is the resplendent quetzal, considered by many to be the most beautiful bird in the world. There are least 400 other bird species, including the balibird, not easily seen but frequently heard, over 100 species of mammals and an estimated 2500 species of plants. What you see most is dripping, dense vegetation, with majestic trees, ferns, bromeliads, vives, mosses and more than 300 species of orchids.
